Maseno University Empowers Youth Through Sensitization on Drug Abuse and Business Skills.
As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Maseno University hosted a two-day youth sensitization forum at the Amphitheater South Wing, drawing participation from youths across Kisumu and Vihiga county. The event focused on sensitization on alcohol and drug abuse awareness as well as training in self-employment and Business skills.
Prof. Rose Anyango, who represented the Deputy Vice Chancellor (AFD), Prof. John Ogunji, officially opened the event. In her remarks, she warmly welcomed the youth and encouraged them to embrace resilience, smart hustling, and future planning.
Ms. Lucy Ngutiki , a counselor at Maseno University, sensitized the youths on alcohol and drug abuse addressing on the growing challenge of alcohol and substance abuse among the youth pointing out on a sobering picture with global and local statistics, revealing that over 60 million people suffer from drug-related disorders and 1 in every 10 youths aged 15–24 is engaged in substance use. Considering that Nyanza region leads nationally in alcohol and drug abuse rates Ms. Ngutiki urged the youth to reclaim their lives, warning that substance abuse robs individuals of their dreams, dignity, health, and future.
Prof. Nelson Obange addressed on business expansion and self-employment challenging the youth to broaden their business mindset beyond survival. Mr. Walter Abwao emphasized the on long-term harm caused by substance abuse. He challenged the belief that drugs offer escape from daily struggles, stating.
